Pokemon Go’s Birthday: Niantic Announces In-Game And Real-World Events

Pokemon Go is approaching its first birthday fast, and Niantic has big plans to celebrate it. The gaming company is planning a number of in-game and real-world events to thank fans for their continued support.

In-game events and big surprises in store from Niantic

“Downloaded more than 750 million times in its first year, Pokemon Go will be bringing Trainers together in new and unique ways this summer through a variety of in-game and live events including Pokemon Go Fest, the first live Pokémon GO event organized by Niantic,” the company said in a blog post.

The first big event will be in the game and is called the Solstice Event. It’s scheduled for June 13, and it will include Ice-type and Fire-type Pokemon, discounted Lucky Eggs and XP bonuses. The event ends June 20 at 1 p.m. Pacific. In the blog post, Niantic hinted that a huge new update can be expected. The company will also launch collaborative gameplay sometime after the Solstice Event closes, giving players a “new way” to play the game.

“Soon thereafter, you can look forward to a new update focused on collaborative group gameplay features that will get you playing Pokémon GO in fun new ways,” the post reads.
Niantic also informed players that it will be closing down the in-game gyms temporarily to make preparations.

As far as what the big update could include, the company will probably add PVP battles, Legendary Pokemon and Raids, but for now, it remains a secret. Meanwhile, the developer recently pushed out an update, but it may not be enough for fans who are looking forward to sweeping changes being made to Pokemon Go. This recent APK update mostly includes bug fixes.

Real-world events for Pokemon Go fans

The first in-person event called Pokemon Go Fest Chicago is scheduled for July 22. At the fun-filled day, Pokemon Go fans will get a chance to meet other players and participate in a variety of activities. Tickets for the event will go on sale on June 19. However, there is no information on the pricing or details of the event, including what activities to expect at the festival.

For European fans, several events are planned between July and September, while for the Japanese audience, the company is planning an event called Pikachu Outbreak in Yokohama in August. The details of these events are also not known.

Pokemon Go launched last summer and has been downloaded 750 million times since then, making it a massive hit globally. Within seven months of its release, the game surpassed $1 billion in worldwide gross revenue, according to Sensor Tower, which based its calculations on the data from Google Play and the iOS App Store. However, the Sensor Tower report, which came out in February, pointed out that daily revenue from Pokémon Go has dropped sharply from $18 million earned in just one day in July 2016 to between $1.5 million and $2.5 million per day.

With these events, Niantic will be hoping to reignite fans’ dying interest in the game.

Pokemon Go Update 1.33.1 / 0.63.1 Hack Available

Do you like to play Pokemon Go in its Hacked state? If you do, there’s some good news. You can now update the hack version of the game to 1.33.1 and 0.63.1 for both iOS and Android. Meaning, that you can get all the official updates from developer Niantic, along with the unofficial tweaks. Here’s what you need to know:

Pokemon Go Update What’s New?

Previous updates for the hacked versions of the game have been available for some time. And for the most part enabled Trainers to use unofficial features and those created by the developer. Now, as far this update is concerned both iOS and Android players will see nothing obviously different in gameplay.

Instead, it seems as though this Pokemon Go update was solely for behind the scenes. An update aimed at fixing instabilities and bugs reported by users since the last upgrade. Now, you may be asking yourself, “Why bother updating?” The answer to that would be to get the very latest stable version of the hack. After all, Niantic Labs continually strives to prevent you from playing. Instead, it wants you to play by its set of rules, so if you’re using the Pokemon Go ++ app, get it now.

Doing so will mean you can continue to enjoy the game, whether that be out amongst the streets or sitting at home. And no one, not even the game’s developer can prevent you from doing so.

How To Get The Update

If for whatever reason it has been a while since you updated Pokemon Go, we have everything you need. So, there’s no reason to panic!

Starting with the iOS version, that’s 1.33.1 this is compatible with an iPhone or iPad. And the first thing you need is an IPA file; it is that which contains the update. You can download the file either directly on your device via the Safari browser or on a computer. You will find it here. Play Pokemon GO In Class To Learn Communication Skills?

Bringing games like Pokemon Go into the classroom may help students learn and practice multiple modes of communication, from writing to gestures, a new paper suggests.
The author of the paper, Emily Howell, is working with teachers to develop new ways to incorporate digital tools in the classroom. The focus of Howell’s work is two-fold—to give students equitable access to technology and help them build multimodal communication skills.

That means not only using technology to consume information or replace traditional classroom tools, but also experimenting with new forms of communication, says Howell, an assistant professor in Iowa State University’s School of Education.
“It’s not just giving students the technology and letting them play, it’s really guiding that interaction…”
Instead of having students read a book on a tablet or use the computer to type an assignment, they need to learn how to create and upload videos or build graphics and maps to convey their message.
Howell’s suggestion of having students play Pokemon Go to build these skills may seem a bit unconventional. However, after playing the smartphone game with her own children, she saw how it could help students with writing and research in ways that align with Common Core standards.
Howell says engaging students through Pokemon Go, a game many are already playing outside the classroom, also generates interest and connects students to their work.
“It is important to give students authentic choices that really have meaning in their lives,” Howell says. “We need to encourage them to develop questions, research the answers and then share that information in writing.”
For example, a common assignment is to have elementary students write an essay on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich—a task students can easily explain, but not a genuine question many have, Howell says. Pokemon Go, like many video games, provides players with limited information or what Howell describes as “just in time learning.” As a result, players have questions about how to use certain tools or advance to the next level.
Playing the game with her own children, Howell watched their enthusiasm in researching and finding the answers to these questions. They were even more excited to share their knowledge with her and their grandmother, who was also playing the game.
Wii golf shows gaming can alter our real-world skills
In a paper published in the journal The Reading Teacher, Howell explains how teachers can have students identify questions about Pokemon Go, find the answers, and present their findings in different formats.

Beyond writing

Pokemon Go incorporates different modes of communication—gestures, visuals, and directions—which makes it a good fit for the classroom, Howell says. Players see the character on their phone, the character is integrated into a map, and the player controls catching the character. Pokemon Go illustrates the need to understand multimodal text, which reflects how we communicate with others, she says.
“We don’t just send a text or email; we have a live chat or video conferences. Anytime teachers can find something that students are already doing, and comes in multimodal form, they can harness that interest and teach students about the tool’s potential,” Howell says.
Expert says Pokémon Go has revived our ‘mundane phones’
Even more than conventional tools such as a paper and pen, teachers must provide a framework for using digital tools. Howell says students need to understand conventional literacy skills, but also learn how to upload files or design elements on a page that are not in a linear progression.
“It’s not just giving students the technology and letting them play, it’s really guiding that interaction so they can express meaning,” Howell says.

Share your work

To make the assignment even more authentic, Howell suggests giving students an outlet to share their work with people outside of the classroom. Many school districts create secure, online platforms where students can share work with family and friends and receive feedback. Knowing that others will view their work helps students develop writing styles for different audiences, not just their teacher, Howell says.
“It makes the assignment more authentic and helps with motivation and understanding the purpose for writing,” she says. “It has academic as well as social benefits.”

Playing Pokémon Go May Help You Burn Calories As Well

Niantic CEO John Hanke said recently that people playing Pokémon Go had walked around 2.8 billion miles or 4.6 billion kilometers while playing the popular smartphone game. If this statement is true, then this mobile app might have achieved the impossible task of making the United States a little bit fitter, says Forbes.

Pokemon Go can make you fitter

Pokemon Go is the fastest app to reach 500 million installs, indicating its popularity. In addition, 2.8 billion miles burns around 340 billion calories, so people who use fitness apps can try Pokemon Go; it’s fun and could help you get fitter. Also burning 3,500 calories kills about one pound, so with other things being the same, people could have lost around 97 million pounds, the report notes.

This may or not be accurate, but what really matters is that one popular augmented reality game which is liked by almost everyone playing it has possibly done more than years of well-meaning propaganda from schools, health authorities and the government to get people off their beds or couches, out of their homes and on their feet to search for Pokemon.

One more milestone

Since its debut, the mobile game Pokemon Go has achieved several records, such as being the fastest to reach 50 million installs on Google Play and the most-downloaded app in its first week ever, and now, there is one more. It is the first game ever to hit $500 million in revenue. This popular smartphone game has surpassed $500 million in global consumer spending across Android and iOS, according to App Annie.

The firm reports that the mobile game hit the milestone in just over 60 days. In early August, App Annie reported that Pokémon Go was on track to exceed $350 million in revenue to date. In comparison, Clash of Clans and Puzzle & Dragons took 400 days, while Candy Crush Saga took over 200 days to earn the same amount of money. Also App Annie revealed that the game is on track to reach 1 billion in revenue by the end of this year.

The report also indicated that in-app revenue is not the only source of income for Pokemon Go. Niantic, the company that built the tech that powers the game, is partnering with brands for in-app promotions and exposure as well. For instance, McDonald’s Japan became the first sponsored location for the game, turning the 3,000 McDonald stores in Japan into Pokémon Go gyms.

Wearable Device For Pokemon Go Coming Next Week

Nintendo is going to release a wearable device that could improve the safety of the most popular mobile game, Pokemon Go. On Thursday, Pokemon Co. and game developer Niantic said a wearable device for playing Pokemon Go will be released next week. The device will be distributed by Nintendo.

Making Pokemon Go safer for players
Earlier, the gaming company and developers planned to release the wearable device by July. The device, called the Pokemon Go Plus, is priced at $35 and has vibration notifications that could improve the security of the game, notes The Wall Street Journal. Recently, there were reports of players getting injured in traffic accidents while their eyes were fixated on their smartphone’s screen.

“As you pass by a PokéStop, Pokémon GO Plus will vibrate and light up and alert you to the location. You’ll even be able to collect new items just by clicking the Pokémon GO Plus. If there’s nearby Pokémon hiding in your area you’ll be alerted with lights and vibrations; catch the Pokémon with a button on Pokémon GO Plus and then continue on your way (later, you can check your Journal to see which Pokémon you’ve just caught),” a Niantic spokesperson said.

Apple getting serious about gaming

The announcement of the Pokémon GO wearable device came after Apple’s new iPhone event on Wednesday. During the event, Google spinoff Niantic said it would provide an Apple Watch version of the famous game. John Hanke, chief executive of Niantic, showed just how the popular mobile game will work on Apple’s wearable device. The game is very popular with over 500 million global downloads.

Niantic disclosed that the Pokemon Go app for the Apple Watch will show users how far they will have to walk or run to hatch an egg. Also the app will show players how many experience points they need to reach the next level. Further, the app will give more information about their fitness levels, and players will be able to see when a Pokestop or Pokemon is near them without having to check the mobile device.

At the event, Apple also announced that SuperMario Run will be exclusive to iOS. The new game will be sold for a set fee. The announcement, however, did not mention if in-game purchases would be available or whether the game will be free to download. The game will be launched in time for the holiday season. The fact that SuperMario can only be played on an iPhone could give a big boost to iOS over Android. Both announcements reflect just how serious the Silicon Valley giant is about gaming.
